How to improve your communication skills

Communication is the pinnacle of what separates man from beast. It is our communication skills that makes each one of us unique, and without them we may as well resort to barking or beating two sticks together.

1. Know your audience. This is very vital before considering how you will begin to communicate. Example: If I was discussing the fundamentals of computer architecture with a elderly person who was born in the early 1930's would I spew out random jargon, or complicated technical descriptions. No!

2. Understand what you are saying. Think it through before presenting yourself. It is an age old mantra "think before your speak". This should hold true in the fine art of communication.

3. Some say don't let emotions enter into communication, but I believe there is rules that should apply. Emotions are sometimes what makes the difference between a boring lecture to an exiting one. You should not let anger rule your word choice, but you should let your passion show through your communication. It is a fine line but if carefully treaded you will be successful.

4. Word choice is also an important thing that can improve your skills. Spend time to research a subject or the words you would commonly use. Some people throw big words to sound intelligent but actually can confuse the listener, or show that they don't really truly understand the meaning behind the syllables.

5. Last but not least. Enjoy speaking, it goes to show a person who is comfortable with them-self will always be the best communicator. A person who is confident, and structured usually is automatically dubbed as intelligent, or outgoing. In fact it could be that they just enjoy the art of communication.

So communication is the difference between a healthy or unstable marriage. It also could be an important factor on things related to career expansion, or even personal growth. There are millions of things that you can do to improve your skills, but the best step is to listen carefully, think out what you want to say, and simply start talking.
