Here is a quick guide to painting and staining bird houses and feeders. The best answer is no, no paint, no stain. Much of the destruction of any number of bird species are the chemicals that we've introduced. Painting decorative bird houses are great for sun porch dcor or as a leader to your garden area but that's it. A wood burning tool can be used to create decorative designs on gourds and wooden birdhouses or feeders. We have enjoyed gourd relief carving much as you would pumpkins for jack-o-lanterns. Even the old purple martin theory doesn't hold water. They will nest just as readily in natural unpainted gourd house clusters as in a white apartment building. Gourds are cheap to buy or grow, and are not expensive to replace.
If you feel that you just can't help your self I would suggest natural vegetable dyes for enhancing relief carving on gourds or wood. Shingles on the roof of bird houses with plenty of overhang will increase run off and keep the house dryer. A good cedar or redwood house will last 10 to 15 years before replacement with no paint, stain or sealer. Some would say that white is cooler, but good ventilation is the key to avoiding overheating for the birds.
The bottom line is if you have grown to love those precious birds that feed and live in your yard or garden why take the risk of shortening their lives or compromising their young. Just don't use paint or stains.
