product of Puebla. Talavera ceramic is available in all the shopping areas of Puerto Vallarta at a variety of prices. A couple of short blocks away there is a shop specializing in blown glass, though many shops in PV carry Mexican glass. Don't be afraid to venture down the side streets in this are. The wonderfully eclectic folk-art shop Puerco Azul (Blue Pig) is just off Basillo Badilo on Constitution.
In the area of Los Muertos Beach in the shops on the street Olas Altas you will find a variety of wares again from the inexpensive to a few shops offering unusual and expensive home dcor items. Near Los Muertos Beach there are street stands selling wares similar to those in the shops, slightly cheaper and with the added attraction that you can bargain with the street vendor. It is not generally acceptable to bargain in shops.
The Malecon and Colonia El Centro district have some of the most upscale shopping as well as renowned fine art galleries showing accomplished local and national artists. For an excellent variety of modern art by Mexican artist, don't miss Galleria Uno at Calle Morelos #561. These shops and galleries are found one and two blocks off the Malecon, primarily on Juarez and Calle Morelos. Though it is best known for its neighborhood Mercado or market, referred to often by tourist as the Flea Market, El Centro's best contribution to shopping is its shops and galleries of high quality arts and crafts. It's Mercado is crowded, stuffy and all items found there are available in more pleasant open air venues at a better or at least similar price.
The Marina Vallarta also offers shopping and galleries in a quiet setting of a small boat marina and without the traffic noise typical of Mexico. Another quiet haven is the mall in Nuevo Vallarta. Both these sites require transportation arrangements, unless you are staying in those areas. You will find the prices somewhat higher in these areas.
Shopping mountain villages, beach towns and road side vendors outside of Puerto Vallarta can bring interesting experiences, unusual items and very reasonable purchases. If you have not spent time in the area, however, you should get direction from locals. Most villages have a market day every week to two weeks, which can be a great opportunity to stumble on to something unusual. In certain beach towns there seem to be one or two specialty products that you do not see regularly in Puerto Vallarta. In others you will see the same things you've seen in Puerto Vallarta. Some
