Choosing dorm room bedding

When getting ready to go to college, there are a multitude of choices to make: which dorm, which classes, and which meal plan. Choosing one's bedding might not seem that important when compared to the other decisions a student must make, however it should be, as sleep is so important to our everyday functioning. In fact, people tend to spend about one third of their lives in bed (www.talkaboutsleep.com). To choose the right bedding, students must consider their sleeping habits, personal preferences, and the college lifestyle.

According to Brown University, A 2001 study found that "only 11% of college students have good sleep quality, and 73% have occasional sleep problems." Proper bedding will not combat late night partying or cramming until 3 a.m., but choosing the right sheets and mattress covers can improve whatever sleep a student does manage to get. The National Sleep Foundation has found that comforting mattresses, as opposed to firmer ones, can lead to a better night's sleep. In addition, synthetic pillows tend to hold in dust mites and other allergens, leading to possibly coughing fits or asthma attacks during the night.

Unfortunately, students often cannot choose what type of mattress they will have on their beds, however they can make the most of them by choosing the right type of mattress toppers. Some options include egg crates, memory foam toppers, or regular cotton mattress pads. From personal experience, I tend to recommend egg crates covered with a mattress pad. This is an economical option, and provides extra cushioning on the mattress. In addition, should anything be spilled on the mattress pad or egg crate, the pad can be washed and egg crates are inexpensive to replace. It should be noted, however, that it is difficult to find an egg crate that will perfectly fit extra-long twin beds that colleges so often provide. It is suggested that the egg crate be fitted to the foot end of the bed. This way, a pillow will rest on the area not covered by the crate. A well-fitted mattress pad should be put over the egg crate to ensure it does not slide around. Egg crates and mattress pads can both be found at home goods stores such as Linens N' Things and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

Personal preference should, of course, play a part in choosing bedding-particularly sheets. It should be known, however, that preference should be aligned with college lifestyle, when possible. As an undergrad, I chose a light-colored comforter and matching sheets. Little did I know
