Over the next few months, from mid-1997, we began to see the advent of the search engine wars, which were largely fought out over the size of their indexes. Yahoo!, Lycos, Excite and Infoseek began experimenting with the concept of adding more services and greater value for their users.
In the summer of 1998, Prior to Direct Hit launched, skewing Relevancy.
In 1998, Google came. Google uses PageRank, basically monitoring how many sites link to a given page. The more sites and the more important the sites that link to a given site the higher the ranking in the result list.
The search engines were expanding their scopes, and they were all emphasizing the fact that search was only a part of what they were doing. Almost none of the some engines could say they are search engines. In many respects, while search engines continued to expand to find new revenue streams and create a niche, very little work was actually done on the search. In the very year of the dot.com bust of 2000, Pay-per-click came into being, as a new advertising mode on search engines.
In 2001, more engines charge for submission.
In 2003, Google Adsense offered a new idea of search engine advertisement.
From the end of 2004 and the beginning of 2005, up to now, though SEO are disturbing the market, no order, bad competition, it is still a trend these days.
During this period, including 2006, and the first half year of 2007, search engines are becoming more and more localized, more specific more personalized, with one aim-to make money, from all related aspects to search engine, also, from expanding services. However, talking about the market share, we know that the leading search engines Google, Yahoo, MSN,
