Growing candytuft

Candytuft can provide a great border for gardens and grows anywhere in the United States. It is one of the few flowering plants that is compact, evergreen, and blooms in bright colors all summer long.

I discovered candytuft growing next to the front porch steps of my home, thanks to a previous owner, when it burst into beautiful white pom-pom style blooms with an unusual sunburst array of petals. The design is unmistakable so when you see candytuft in bloom for the first time you will never forget it and will unlikely confuse it with anything else.

I was intrigued by this low growing mound of evergreen stems that seemed to bounce back happy as a lark and bloom consistently every year regardless of how many times I pruned it. One time I thought I had lost it when the weed eater got away from me, but it defied all the odds and has become one of my favorite plants in the garden. I have always been able to count on it to perform.

I went plant hunting at my local garden center and to my delight discovered that candytuft is widely available. You can choose colors in red, pink, or white. The plant does not require much maintenance besides the occasional pruning and deadheading that helps it to put out even more blooms.

You can grow candytuft from seed or cuttings. Cuttings are best because you will have a new plant in no time. Pick a bright sunny spot to plant it for the most blooms. Candytuft is so versatile that it can even handle poor soil and dry conditions. If you are looking for a great flowering plant that is simple to grow, choose candytuft.
