How does the media portray black America?

by Lady Demure

Created on: August 07, 2007

The media portrays Black America in a variety of ways. As far as film and television are concerned, blacks in the past, were only seen in a few types of roles, typically as service personnel, or criminals. Today the roles for blacks have expanded. But still a myopic view of this community exists. Characters for black actors these days revolve around an exaggerated corporate tycoons, athletes, rappers, and sex objects (women). The themes for many newer black films are shallow, with only certain topics being addressed on film.

In other areas of the media, the world still sees blacks as the resident criminals of society. They are often portrayed in ways that allow the world to believe that they are all unintelligent and uncivilized. These portrayals continue to feed into the negative prejudices about African Americans in general, which is why many aspects of their communities are not taken seriously.
