There are many reasons why a home owner might want to install a new window, though the most likely reason is that the old window is rotten, or that the owner wishes to have double glazing to replace existing single glazing.
Replacing a window doesn't have to be that difficult and can be performed by a common sense owner, although it is wise to check prices of windows before deciding to perform this task yourself, and also to compare prices with prices given by qualified installers. The reason for this is that your window sizes may not be standard off the shelf sizes, and these may be expensive to order and have made specially, whereas an installation company may be able to produce those windows required and fit them much cheaper than can be achieved by a home owner.
MEASURING
Measuring for a new window is essential, as much of the framework of a window is concealed within the walls. Here, the manner in which windows are measured is by measuring the opening area of the window from the inside of the side jambs, and again from the top of the sill to the bottom of the top jamb. Usually the framework that makes up a window is standard, so that the size of jambs is less important. The actual measurement of jambs of shop bought windows can be measured and compared to existing ones quite easily.
TAKING OUT THE OLD WINDOW.
To take out the old window, which can be a dusty experience, it is wise to dust sheet those items that are in a close proximity to the window, and move as much as you can away from the window area. Looking inside the framework for possible fixings, it is unusual to find these on older style windows, which are normally fixed on the outside of the frame with metal brackets that go into the wall. Many of these have a rounded metal head which can be seen on the inside frame of the window, and it is necessary to chip away at the plaster in order to reveal the fixings, take the window out and look at the placement of the fixings on the old window to determine if they are secure enough to take the new fixings.
If it is possible to remove opening lights during the removal phase of the old framework this is advisable since it will eliminate the risk of glass being broken.
FITTING THE NEW WOOD WINDOW.
There are brackets available in hardware stores which screw onto the outside edge of a window frame without the windows in place. What these do is go into holes at the side of the windows and are cemented into place. It's awkward to get
