Unlike many realists out there, I happen to be among the small percentage of people who believe that any dream can come to fruition. Why?
There will always be obstacles. Unless you are one of the few truly blessed individuals who happen to be born into a family which can provide anything your heart desires, the only one who can turn fantasy into reality, is YOU. I believe that the bigger the dream... the bigger the obstacle. Sometimes we may not always choose the right path to our dreams, but in the end, any road will take you there.
How many times in our lives are we faced with a great decision? It can be nerve wracking, indeed, trying to predict the right direction. Our futures depend on the choices we make at the crossroads. Should I marry this person? Should I go to this college? Should I move? Should I accept the new job offer? Should I spend money on a motorcycle right now when I can barely afford my car payment? We all have many decisions but these choices are the guiding lights on our runway to the end result. Many people fantasize and wish for things they would love to have. Unfortunately, most of those same people have a mentality that what they truly want is somehow out of reach.
Our dreams change sometimes along the way. One could liken the obstacles in life to that of horse shows. Barrel racing, for example is a great analogy. In barrel racing, the rider (you) rides the horse as fast as possible, heading for the first barrel (a goal you would like to achieve). Once the rider reaches its first barrel, he must slow down to go around it. He keeps on riding; fast again, to the next barrel. And so on. I am not suggesting that one should race toward their dreams. Instead, I am offering the idea that once you have made it around the first challenge then you are ready for the second, until finally you reach the finish line and have accomplished all of these goals (barrels). So you need to ask yourself, what is my finish line? What do I hope to be, or have, once I have gone around all of the barrels?
Always the aspiring artist, I was thrilled in high school to be granted a scholarship to attend the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale. At the time, I had a high school sweetheart in Maine who did not want me to move so far away. I declined the scholarship and got married at a very young age. I attended a local college instead and was offered a position at an advertising agency. Somehow, I learned to be a graphic designer and photographer without going to art school.
