The importance of foreign language requirements for high school students

High school foreign language classes are a joke. I took two years of Japanese and all I could do is introduce myself and use one word sentences to get my point across. When I took a two week exchange student trip over there I learned that I could say more with my hands and body than with my mouth. So, I definitely think that high school language programs need to raise the bar. However, most people in European countries and some others speak English, so you can get by with a basic knowledge of a language in most cases. Unless of course you were going to be somewhere for an extended period of time. Mostly I think in American schools, we need to be more focused on teaching the kids to speak English, the government and teachers are all so set on ESL classes and teaching those who speak no English at all that often other kids get over-looked, and they aren't learning as much as they should be. Soon other countries will speak out language better than us. Actually, I think they already do.
