Give me that old time religion.... Hmmmmm... I had to chuckle to myself when I saw that title. I guess it is a matter of opinion on what old time religion really is all about. I follow an Earth based pathway and I guess that is about as old time as someone can actually be when it comes to "religion."
There were thousands of belief systems in place before Christianity came into being. In fact, there were thousands of belief systems in place before the Bible was ever written. And, they all prospered.
The days of our week are named after Roman Gods and Goddesses, so are the months of our year. Christmas is actually part of the Winter Solstice celebrations. Even Biblical scholars will agree that Jesus was not born during midwinter. Even the name Easter is based on a hare-headed Goddess named Eostarte.
Christianity is a borrowed religion, based on the teachings of primarily Judaism, but with quite a few Pagan based concepts and ideas thrown into the mixture.
My life passion is the study of religion and beliefs. I love to look at the cultures, the societies and the moral structures that were in place when the "rules and regulations" of certain religions were written. And, it seems to me that the ones that have stayed intact over thousands of years are the Earth based philosophies that show honor and respect to the Earth as well as acknowledging an unknown but highly respected Creator.
We can never get rid of that old time religion. As long as we dwell upon the Earth, we are subject to the natural laws that are in effect. If we destroy our planet we destroy all life that exists upon it as well.
So, give me that old time religion.. and hope that humankind can somehow realize that it is not what we religion we may be that matters.. it is the celebration of life that we all share.
