Having knowledge of searching trends is very beneficial. Some are interested in having this knowledge to market their own websites; others seek this knowledge to satisfy their own curiosity.
There are a number of different types of search trends sites that are often available through the various search engines. Each one offers a different spin on the popular searches. The two different types of search trends sites are those that list top searches for a specified time period and those who list searches based off specific niches or topics.
Some examples of search trend sites for specified time periods are: Yahoo's "The Buzz" (http://buzz.yahoo.com/) where they list the most popular buzz subjects searched for. Ask.com has one that outlines the top searches for the week with photos (http://sp.ask.com/en/docs/iq/ iq.shtml). Google has "Zeitgest" that shows "search patterns trends and surprises" from their search engine (http://www.google.com/press/z eitgeist.html). Lycos has their "The Lycos 50 movers and shakers" (http://50.lycos.com/) where they have very extensive info, photos and stats of the top searches.
There are also many resources for those who are interested in specific keywords and search terms in the search engines some of these resources are available via the web and some are available as programs you download. An example of a web based keyword tracker is at overature.com (http://inventory.overture.com /d/searchinventory/suggestion/ ) you can type in your specific search term or keyword and it will bring up the number of searches done for a specified time frame that also includes related searches with similar terms. Wordtracker also has a downloadable program that provides some great keyword stats. My personal favorite search resource is Google.com. Google offers "Google Trends" (http://www.google.com/trends) where you can search for specific terms that interest you and Google will display a graph showing the terms popularity over time. Also, upon visiting the Google trends site you will see the days "hot trends" searched items. Another service Google offers is "Google Alerts" (http://www.googlealert.com) where you can track and receive email updates on your search interests.
If you are looking for what others are searching for or if you are just curious there are an infinite number of resources on the internet that you can sue to find the information you need all you have to do is search in the right places! Hopefully this article got you going in the right direction, happy searching!
