When getting fired is an opportunity for change and growth

In the past, college graduates would begin their careers straight out of college and retain employment with these companies for an extended period of time, often spending their entire careers with one employer. The last several decades, however, have seen an increasing in individuals who constantly change their employers, moving from one company to another and spending only several years at a time with one company. Because there is such an influx of college graduates ready and willing to fill positions for less pay, it is not uncommon for companies to filter out certain individuals who just do not make the cut.

Although, for the most part, being fired is typically saturated with negative connotations, this experience does not necessarily have to negatively affect your life. In fact, being fired can sometimes be an opportunity for change and personal growth. If you have been fired, one of the most important things to remember is not to blame yourself for your perceived failure to live up to corporate standards. Keep in mind that while you may have been comfortable at your previous place of employment, there are always other positions to be filled.

If you have been fired, the first thing that you should do is ask questions! Ask your employer to set aside some time to go over the reasons why you were let go. Asking questions will help you garner a better understanding as to why you were unable to deliver what was required of you in your position. Not only will these answers help settle your insecurity about your perceived failures as an employee, they will also allow you to view situations from a third party, giving you the opportunity to see how you could have better handled situations or resolved conflicts.

In addition, this conversation can also help you understand how you can work to mold your behavior for any future positions. You may even have the opportunity to learn from your employer about potential resolutions for future conflicts, thereby preventing you from making the same mistakes twice.

Also, it is important to note that upon being fired, an exit interview with your employer will also help you understand if there are any unfounded reasons for your firing. Perhaps your employer has decided to let you go because of your race, age, gender, or some other illegal reason, such as pregnancy. If this is the case, you should be aware that in most states, employees have a great deal of rights when it comes to unlawful discharge. If you feel that you have been fired for inappropriate or illegal reasons, you should certainly consider seeking an attorney who will further assist you with building and executing your case.

In conclusion, while being fired is not usually an easy experience to handle, it can certainly give you plenty of opportunity to reflect on your past behaviors and allow you to search for methods of self improvement. Overall, you should still remember not to be so hard on yourself. Personalities will clash in both personal and professional realms of life; therefore, individuals should know how to use negative criticisms to their benefit by focusing on improvement. One of your main goals in both your professional and personal lives should be to strive for continued improvement. By focusing on the positive aspects of any negative experience or criticisms, you will undoubtedly learn how to better conduct yourself in future situations. Also, you will leave your current position with your head held high and a positive attitude that will leave them questioning why they let you go in the first place.
