Short stories: End of the world

International Falls Montana

A long time ago in the mountains of Montana, before men walked there, a colony of ants had been living, building, and making a civilization. Unbeknown to the colony a caravan of men on horseback were making their way to the west coast. The ants worked as if nothing could ever happen to their little hill. Then one day a scout ant noticed a distant image, a mirage of sorts and it grew larger. The scout went back to the colony and warned the queen. The queen had the scout killed and kept the information to herself. She had a bunker built deep down inside the hill for her and her family, friends, and administrators. The rest of the colony went on blissfully unaware. Until one day a giant black hoof appeared in the sky and as quickly as it came it was gone leaving behind a crater and devastation never before experienced by the colony. Ants lay everywhere. The hill was destroyed except for very deep down.

The queen gathered her council and held a world summit concerning what to do in case the Great Hoof should come again. The council agreed that they should make a plan to leave the hill and find another hill but the numbers were too small to leave just now. Not to mention all of the loss-knowledge, technology, and culture-never to be recovered. They'd need to re-make the culture and they decided how that would be done. The queen called the greatest thinkers of the colony together and had them begin to write their history in case the Great Hoof should come and wipe them out again, this time more wholly and completely. They should have a record of their existence, they should have a design for living and keeping the Hoof happy. The rest of the colony set to work rebuilding. When the great thinkers had their plan worked out, it was mandated that the colony attend a weekly meeting detailing how to behave. It was important that these rules be followed or the Great Hoof would come again. The day of the Great Hoof was still very fresh in the colony's minds and it was easy to make sure they all followed the new rules.

A long time passed and generations of ants were told of the Great Hoof and soon the ants that lived thru the day of the Great Hoof died and the story soon became a legend, and then a myth, and soon ants began to question the rules. But the ants continued to re-build. They were getting big again. Soon they would surpass their original numbers, know more about the world around them, and before long they would have a plan to leave the
