puppy. Look for bright clear eyes, and a friendly playful disposition. Watch for a nice clean coat, and no evidence of diarrhea. The puppy's surroundings, as well as those of their parents, should be clean, uncluttered and roomy. The environment into which a puppy is born and kept, will often have a great deal of influence on their health now and even later in life. Ask the vendor about innoculation details.
Being such a popular breed, many Goldens end up in shelters or puppy mills, and are in need of rescue. Rescues are usually of paramount importance to breed clubs, and these clubs, will help place rescued animals into permanent or foster homes, who have the means to care for the breed.
The Golden Retriever has a long life expectancy, ranging anywhere from 14 to sixteen years, on average. Problems that come with this breed, as it grows elderly, are hip dysplasia, cataracts and cancer.
The gentle devotion, and calm disposition of the Golden Retriever have made it an excellent companion dog, for the blind, as well as the hearing impaired, like the German Shepherd. The Golden will also be seen, assisting as a drug detecting dog at borders, or at work for the police. Being easily trained, the breed is quite versatile, and is becoming more than just a family or hunting dog.
The Golden Retriever is devoted to it's people, and makes a good watch dog, that doesn't bark much. This breed requires a great deal of interaction and activity to stave off boredom. A country home isn't a requirement, but a roomy yard, and the ability to take lots of walks with it's owner is a must.
If a quiet, sweet natured dog, with spirit and energy is what you hope for like Lord Tweedmouth did, then the Golden Retriever is the right fit for you, and your family.
