Although there can be some disadvantages to having a roommate, I believe that having a roommate during your first year of college is a great idea. Not only are you automatically thrown into an area to meet new people, but you are also allowed to become a well-rounded person by meeting a diversity of people. Some college students are worried about not liking or not getting along with their roommate, but having differences with your roommate does set you up for reality. You will never get along with every person you meet and having a roommate in college will allow you to practice how to deal with differences you may encounter later in life especially in your career.
My roommate experience was wonderful in college and after a year after graduation we still keep in contact even though we now live in different states. Not only was she my study partner but she was also there when life outside of school became overwhelming. We shared each other's best and worst moments in college and sometimes all you need is someone by your side to get you through.
