Children's fitness and the methods that address its needs

It is true that childhood obesity is on the rise. And as a parent (and a step-parent) I try to come up with ways I can improve the situation.

When I was growing up in the 1970s, in the summer months I would be off early in the day, pop back in once and awhile to grab a snack or go to the bathroom and then I would be off again until the streetlights came on.

Then I would scamper home with my bare feet filthy, a deep tan and a big smile.

However; the world has changed.

We need to be vigilant about protecting our children from predators and that means we need to seek out family-friendly activities.

Surprisingly, your local dollar store might have some things to help get you get your family moving.

I have purchased hula hoops, badminton rackets and birdies, balls, skipping ropes and more all at local dollar stores.

When you are on a budget, the fact that these items are available at such a low cost makes it easier to get out and get active with your children.

I have found that the children enjoy playing more when the adults join in (especially when they trounce us)!

With all aspects of child-rearing, as parents we need to lead by example. We need to turn off the TV, the computer or the gaming system.

We need to get off the couch and get outside with our children.

When we were young, we never had to think of ways to be active - it was just a way of life and as parents, we need to make it a way of life for our children now.
