Dog breed: German Shepherd

and pride. The breed standard requires a dog that is steady in temperament, and that conforms to the ideal size of 24-26 inches at the withers (base of the neck above the shoulder) and between 70 and 95 lbs. Females are ideal at the smaller end of the size and weight spectrum. Accepted colours by the American and Canadian Kennel Clubs, are black and tan, black, sable, and, sable and black. There are also white German Shepherds, and while very attractive, are considered to be a fault, and are therefore not permitted entry to dog shows. They do however make charming and devoted pets, and are loved by many.

The German Shepherd is a breed, that stands apart from others, and is easily recognized. It has a steady fearless gaze, self confidence and a certain aloof quality, that doesn't lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate relationships with strangers. Males have a masculine carriage, with well developed muscle tone. Females tend to be softer in appearance, with a more feminine manner. Both have what is known as a double coat, the amount of undercoat varying with the seasons, the top coat, consisting of a slightly course protective fur. Grooming is relatively low maintenance, with the need for a few brushings throughout the month, and only a few baths a year.

A reliable breeder, can assist in finding the ideal animal, whether you hope to show them professionally, or simply want a devoted friend or watchdog. Professional breeders can be found both online, or in magazines and journals, devoted to dogs. Local breeders are also a possibility one can look into, when searching for a puppy. When visiting a breeder, points to watch for, include the health of the parent animals, the cleanliness and size of the environment devoted to them and their young, and their general appearance. A filthy and small enclosure, with too many animals for it's size could result in unhealthy animals, and is best avoided.

Selecting a German Shepherd puppy is quite easy, if you keep certain guidelines in mind, when making your choice. The puppy should be bright eyed and playful, alert and curious. A healthy puppy will be steady on it's feet, and will have good proportion for it's size and age. Note, the paws tend to seem oversized in young dogs. This is perfectly natural. When choosing a puppy, don't choose the largest or the smallest of the litter. Choose one of the sizes in between, as this usually guarantees the most attractive companion when it becomes and adult.
