and burned from barbeque grills after each use.
If you spot a predator lurking about the yard, a gentle spray of water may be enough to frighten an animal away but your efforts must remain diligent. It may take time before an animal realizes that stalking the birdhouse means an unpleasant shot of water.
Although rather expensive, ultrasound/ultrasonic deterrents are available at many bird and garden stores that may be effective in staving off cats and other stalking animals. But be wary that other mammals are often deterred from the yard as well, and this can be a problem for dog owners who routinely let their pets outdoors.
If the predators continue to plague your birdhouses, cease stocking nearby feeders with seed or suet for a while which may make the yard less enticing to uninvited hunters. A last resort may be a phone call to the local police department, animal control center, or department of natural resources. They may be able to offer advice or assist in removing particularly nuisance pests or dangerous animals that plague your yard or birdhouses.
Following simple precautions and care can provide a safe environment for backyard birds of all kinds. A small amount of foresight can offer hours of entertainment just beyond the kitchen window.
