are also high in saturated fat. Trans fats are big dietary offenders. They are synthetically altered fats formed by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil through a process called hydrogenation. The fat becomes more solid and less likely to spoil. There are often high amounts of trans fats in prepared baked goods, crackers, doughnuts, cookies and cakes. Shortenings and some margarines are also high in trans fats.
Our bodies are very good are very good at making their own cholesterol. Almost all of the cholesterol you need to survive is actually made in your liver. This is why some people have naturally high cholesterol levels, despite eating a healthy diet. People simply don't need any intake of cholesterol to be healthy. However, cholesterol is readily available in our diet from meat, poultry, eggs, seafood, dairy products, lard and butter.
When you combine the cholesterol your liver makes (which by itself is enough to thrive) with all those yummy cookies and brownies grandma likes to bake, you are heading for a high fat disaster. See if you can talk grandma in to making a nice poached salmon instead.
The best advice is to limit, but not exclude, fat intake from one's diet. Selecting the "high quality" fats is also very important. Eat more fish and fewer cookies. All fats are not equal, and should not be counted as such.
