SSH stands for Secure SHell. It is a network protocol (set of rules for transfer of data) for connection between two computers over a network of some kind. It's technology is based on a public key (where a public key and a private key mathematically relate somehow to form an unlocking of data) cryptography. It is most commonly used for logging onto a server or another computer from a distance(remotely over a network) to execute commands.
The protocol has 3 main layers. The transport layer, the user authentication layer and the connection layer. All layers have different jobs in making the protocol work the way it does.
