What you should know about buying a computer

Buying a computer should not be a stressful endeavour. You'll need to consider how you want to use the computer. You need to consider how much you want to spend. Also you should think about what accessories you will need.

First decide what you will primarily use the computer for. You're requirements will be different based on your use of the device just as you would choose a different vehicle to haul loads then to commute to work every day.

Next think about how much you want to spend. You will be presented with a variety of options and you should keep in mind the cost of each. Don't spend more then is necessary on a computer, computers become obsolete fast enough that it's not normally worth spending huge amounts for top of the line equipment if it's not necessary.

Finally what accessories do you need. Would you like an LCD monitor or a trackball instead of a mouse. Do you want an awesome sound system or is a camera more important.

When you have all of this information you will be able to make an informed decision. If you know someone who is a tech wiz, drag them along.

Here are some common uses for computers and the equipment that you might need.

1. Gaming computers. Amazingly this is one of the most demanding uses that a computer can be put to. For casual gaming most any modern machine will do, but for serious gamers only the best will work. You will need a fast processor, lots of RAM, good speakers, and the best graphics card you can afford. Other accessories gamers will like are speciality keyboards and mice that have programmable keys. Headsets for chatting while gaming. Special joysticks and larger computer monitors along with web cameras are common.

2. Graphics and Video editing. Yet another demanding use for a computer. Casual image editing can be done on most computers. Experts may choose a Macintosh for high end graphics and video. At the least one needs a fast processor, lots of ram, and a good monitor. Other accessories that can be handy include a high end color printer. A tablet pointing device instead of or in support of a mouse. Firewire or USB 2 ports. Media readers for the various media you will use such as compact flash or memory sticks.

3. General purpose computer. This computer is the typical family computer that will be used for email, web browsing, playing occasional games, and writing papers or doing homework. This machine may also be used to run financial applications or keep a diary. This computer does not need to be complex or high end. Any
