Cancer: An overview

INTRODUCTION TO CANCER-cancer,a common name developing at some stage of life and which is second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases.cancer may effect people at any age but risk increases with age.to understand cancer one must understand their biology.it arises in sequence of mutations in DNA of at least one cell ,which then no longer behaves like normal neighboring cells.mutations gives cell an advantage to grow and spread and invade to other parts of body.almost all cancers are caused by abnormalities in genetic material and abnormality can be due to effect of carcinogens such as tobacco ,infectious materials or radiation etc.

GENES AFFECTED-genetic abnormality in cells during cancer affect two group genes .they are ONCOGENES which get activated and TUMOR SUPPRESSING GENES which get inactivated in cancer cells.DIAGNOSIS-A firm diagnosis requires pathological examination of abnormal tissue .screening is the method of detecting cancer at very early age.MANAGEMENT-in order to plan management doctor must know primary site, stage, general condition of patient and treatment options.cancer can be treated by surgery ,chemotherapy ,radiation therapy etc .number of other cancer treatments are coming up but cancer is such a disease that it is unlikely that there will be single cure for it.
