Life is funny, as they say, but that's the way it goes
Your enemy turns out to be your friend, your friends turn into foes
When I was small,I'd look at the stars, I'd smile and then I'd sigh
I had my dreams of what life was like, my hopes were mighty high
My dad was strict and I'm grateful for that too
But I didn't always understand why I couldn't do what I wanted to do
I'd think to myself how good it would be to be grown
I could do just as I pleased if I could be out on my own
I had a picture of the way life should really be
Oh, if I could be my own boss, the joy of being free
But all too soon I did grow up and now that I'm grown
I found that I was free then, it's now my freedom's gone
For then I laughed, I played, it was then that I was free
The freedom that I had, they took from me
Fow now every light that comes my way, all the joys and laughs
They grab up, stomps into bits and shatter it like glass
The other dreams I had, they mostly came true for me
I have my home, my flowers, but all too far from free
They say we all have a little kid left in us, somewhere inside
But the little girl that was in me I'm sure must have died
But if by chance a spark of it has managed to survive
They'll find it and kill it, they'll not rest while it's alive
And what of the little boy in them, you wonder if it does..
No my friend you see, I think it never was
