Americans are not 'stupid' but are often too insular in their education and too complacent about where they think they stand. I know Americans who travel widely and speak other languages and who never make the gaffs that cause other people to shake their heads and smirk. They know that the Sydney Harbour Bridge does not connect Sydney to NZ, for example. If Amrica has managed to have a pre-eminant position globally its people cannot be stupid. Wealth and power don't mix well with stupidity. However, Americans do need to stop holding up their lifestyle, which exhibits their thinking processes, as the epitome of modern civilization. Many people - at least in the West - have no desire to emulate the American way of life. Instead of promoting a culture of idiocy through TV (the awful celebrity scandals ad nauseum, expose shows, so-called 'survivor' series that show the worst of people's natures instead of the best) Americans need to concentrate on showing the best they can be, real heros, advancing wisdom rather than materialsim. They need to return to the integrity of earlier times when morality wasn't scoffed at and integrity was prized. Currently,America is in a moral and social and economic slide and needs to wake up and remember the lessons of history, particularly that of the decadent Romans versus the nothing-to-lose barbarians.
