Do you have MySpace? I have been asked this question on many occasions - while at a PTA meeting at my son's school (by another parent), at my nail salon, by someone I had just met while dining out or at a local bar, just to name a few. Chances are you have been asked also. This is because MySpace is the social networking website of the millennium. Founded in 2003, it quickly caught on and appealed to the masses. It is a way to keep in touch with friends, family, children away at college and just about anyone else you care to correspond with.
MySpace offers users a free membership to post photographs, listen to music, personalize and customize their own web page using HTML and CSS, email and instant message other MySpace users, among many other options. Upon signing up (which is a simple 5 minute process) you can begin adding individuals to your profile which are referred to as your "friends". These friends are able to make comments on your page as you are theirs. As you start to build your friends list with your family, friends, coworkers, neighbors etc., you can begin to personalize your profile. This consists of choosing colors, fonts, background, a music selection to be played on your page, and adding any personal pictures and information you would like viewed by others. Your page will display your age, sex and location. Anything you want to have on your page, YOU CAN. There are also ways to remove unwanted page default items and make your page private from anyone not on your friends list. Before you know it you have a uniquely designed page that is all about you and what you have chosen it to be.
I guess I should mention that I have a MySpace page. I have since May 2006. I signed up and created a page for myself out of pure curiosity. I had been asked numerous times if I had one. When I replied "No, I do not." the puzzling looks I received time after time, had me sitting down one day to see what all the fuss was about. Boy oh boy, did I find out. After beginning to search for people I knew and add them as friends, I began to customize my page. It was interesting and fun. Learning as I went, I ended up with a brightly colored, animated background for my page. I chose my favorite song and set it to play when anyone visited my page. I began to add pictures of myself, family and friends. Now I had my page set up and a friends list that was growing by the minute.
I then began to realize the obsession with MySpace. I would be out in public and hear someone say
