Both the breeder and the dog owner, share in the responsibility for the excess of abandoned or sheltered dogs. Everyone should take the responsible position of breeding dogs with great care and consideration for the new owner of the young pups, bred into this world.

No one person, breeder, nor owner can ever forget to be a responsible breeder. Too many dogs end up abandoned to run wild on the street or in the pound or dog shelters. This has to be a concern for everyone, not one individual. We all, have to prevent this from happening to the dogs we breed.

DOG BREEDERS

Breeders in most cases make every effort to insure that the puppies sell to responsible owners as they have a reputation to uphold. Most genuine breeders that care for their dogs would make sure the buyer understands the needs of that particular dog. They would not for instance sell an Alsatian pup to a little frail person living in a small unit or flat.

Firstly, the dog would be too active. Secondly, it would need lots of exercise that the owner would not be able to give. Therefore, the dog will end on the street or in a shelter. This would go against that breeder, as they need good word of mouth representation. They would not jeopardize their good record by selling the wrong breed of dog to an unsuitable owner.

The genuine breeders need to make sure the dogs vaccinated against the most common diseases before selling them. The breeder should recommend that the new owner have their pup sterilized or neutered. Explaining that it will be a much better dog and less likely to stray if, they have the operation.

On the other hand, the back yard breeder may not be as interested on what happens to the dog after they receive the money.

I must stress that not all back yard breeders are irresponsible though. The majority of breeders all care and love the dogs that they breed or they would not do it. On the other hand the minority, do not have the pups vaccinated. Neither, do they care who buys the pups or whether they are suited to the owners or not, as long as they have a sale. This shows irresponsibility for the dog.

DOG OWNERS

The majority of dog owners act responsible, because they love and care what happens to their dog; In fact, some owners treat their dogs like one of their children, and as part of the family.
