What are civil liberties?

Civil liberties are rights that everybody should be entitled to from birth. They are enjoyed across the free world to varying degrees. It is the name given to freedom that protect the individual against the power of the Government. These liberties keep the Government in check by setting limits on its powers and how it can interfere in an individual's life. But repressive regimes will do all they can to crush any opposition by restricting and denying their citizens these inalienable rights.

The concept of civil liberties dates back to the Magna Carta in 1215 and encapsulates freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion. It also allows for due process of law, a fair trial with an accused's right to a proper defense. And the individual's privacy must be respected.

These rights are protected in certain countries through a Constitution, a Bill of Rights and other documents and laws such as the European Convention on Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Bloody wars have been fought over the years as people have sought to guard their hard-earned civil liberties and human rights. Today, most civilized nations have checks in place to stop governments abusing these liberties, including regular democratic elections.

What must be said is that while we are free to enjoy our civil liberties, that also brings responsibilities. We are not free to abuse those freedoms. For example, we can say whatever we like, so long as that does not interfere with other people's rights. Hate speech and intolerance of others is condemned in democratic societies as it marginalizes those who should enjoy the same freedoms as the rest of us.
