The beginning of our hike started at the corner of route 1, Washington Blvd. and Levering Avenue in Howard County, Maryland. Levering Ave. is a bike route for Patapsco State Park. We hiked roughly 3-4 miles from the intersection to the river. Along the way we passed the historic Thomas Viaduct. Built in 1835 it is the world's largest multiple arched stone railroad bridge with an arc. Originally called "Latrobe's Folly," it was expected to collapse in a cloud of dust as the first train rolled across. Benjamin Latrobe, the bridges architect was inspired by the Egyptian pyramids, and planned for the 612 foot, eight-arched bridge to withstand the hands of time. Obviously his skeptics were wrong as the bridge has survived many floods, and is now a National Historic Landmark.
As soon as we reached the river we immediately jump in because it was extremely hot and the river, thankfully was in the right place at the right time, or was it us that was in the right place.... Never mind. The river was so refreshing we ended up hiking back to my truck through the river. For the most part it was very shallow, however there were a few places where we could submerge ourselves completely under. My son loved it. He collects rocks and near the end of the hike we just sat in the water searching for additions to his collection. Over all we logged somewhere around 6-8 miles.
