No, Apple's iPhone will not revolutionize mobile computing.

Is it any wonder that the initial euphoria over it has died down? Newspapers and news channels covered the launch of the iPhone quite exhaustively. People stood in queues for hours together just to lay their hands on it. However, thereafter they have been sorely disappointed. Die hard Apple fans will strongly contest this but like it or not that is what the fact is!

First of all it would be wrong to think that iPhone is a revolutionary concept. From a lay man's perspective, all that this phone does is to combine several gadgets into one. This cannot be considered as anything innovative unlike the iPod which was indeed a revolutionary concept. Earlier mobile phones has been tried with cameras, palmtops and what not. But these too did not catch on. People want a cell phone that they can use to talk ... they would rather buy a digital camera which provides better pictures.

Companies like Apple must also realize that releasing products just for the heck of it is not acceptable to consumers. A product will only be successful if there is a defined and unsatisfied need for it. To be revolutionary the product needs to go beyond that. It has to appeal to customers and in such a manner that they may not have realized that the need exists. Take the case of iPod. No one knew there was such a need but when Apple brought the product to the market, it appealed to everyone and it brought about a revolution.

By releasing the phone early, Apple has only proved its skeptics right. Apple has only done what other IT companies are most famous for doing. Release a new version of the software before the old one is mature enough. Look at the recent product releases from Microsoft, Intel, Oracle and you will realize the difference between a revolutionary product and an also-ran.
