Racial inequality or oppression: Do they truly exist in today's society?

by thegirl

By default, the human is bound to stereotype and discriminate. As thinking beings, we have beliefs and opinions. We are also attracted to power, to rule and control our surroundings. With the unequal distribution of power and wealth in today's society, iis only natural to stereotype and discriminate.

History has shown how men fight among themselves for power and wealth. Men have learned that with great power, comes great wealth. To maintain their power, and thus wealth, we saw how men created racism as a tool to oppress the powerless.

Today, it is not much different. Racial inequality works in a much subtle way, usually undetected or ignored because we are so used to it that we are blinded. Going to a store be different experiences for whites from blacks. As a cashier during my college years, I have been told to not accept checks from blacks because "their checks tend to bounce." That is a privilege that whites have over blacks. Even when visiting restaurants, blacks have to wait longer to be seated. They do not receive the smiling faces and friendly chats from waiters. A waitress friend explains that blacks generally tip less and so waiters usually do not bother to serve them.

On March 1991, national news broadcast beating of Rodney King by white cops in Los Angeles. A more recent example is the beating of Robert Davis during the Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans on October 2005, also caught on tape. The video footages are loud proofs that racial inequality and oppression still exist in today's society.

So why have things not changed? Because we are in denial. Many of us are ignorant about the daily discriminations that happen sometimes right under our noses. We refuse to acknowledge that such uncivilized treatments exist in our developed society. We prefer to believe that the crude acts of oppressions were left behind in history texts, that we are in fact much civilized and cultured today. The truth is, we are still the same. The discrimination and oppression are the fundamentals of how our society functions. Until everyone of us acknowledge our actions, things will not change. Unfortunately, it is too deeply rooted in our society.
