HDL (high density lipoproteins) is considered good cholesterol. They protect the artery wall from atherosclerosis process. Atherosclerosis is the cholesterol build up in the blood vessels. This occurs when LDL (low density lipoproteins) that is circulating through the blood penetrates the inner lining of the vessels and become trapped in the artery wall. Eventually the build up of LDL, cell inflammation and blood clotting can block the normal blood flow in the coronary arteries.
HDL extracts the cholesterol particles from the artery walls and then carries them to the liver. The liver eliminates the cholesterol with bile. It also interferes with the process of LDL being able to accumulate.
The total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio is a number that you want to understand. The number is obtained by dividing total cholesterol by HDL cholesterol. A higher ratio indicates higher risks. An average ratio would be 4.5. You should be aiming for something like 2 or 3.
The risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) and atherosclerosis are strongly related to HDL cholesterol levels. Very low and very high HDL cholesterol levels run in families. It is impossible to change your genetics so we have to focus on behavior and medication to help.
So how can we increase our HDL levels to help effect the ratio between HDL and LDL? Check your life style and see if there are changes you can make without having to take medication.
Regular aerobic exercise is recommended. If you are overweight losing weight should help the situation. If you are a smoker, stop. Even one drink of alcohol per day can help, although it is not recommended as a standard treatment.
There are medications that can be effective in increasing HDL cholesterol. These include nicotinic acid (niacin), genfibrozil and estrogen. Statin drugs are used to lower LDL and so the ratio is effected.
The keys are as follow:
pay attention to what you eat
get your cholesterol check
learn about your family medical history
exercise
take medication if necessary
