I have written articles on this subject previously but discovered a new opinion now that all is revealed. Spoiler Alert!'
I've always wanted to say that. Anyway I often suspected that maybe Snape was really on Dumbledore's side from the beginning but couldn't bring myself to believe it. Having finished the series finally I see that I was wrong to believe Snape could not have been loyal to Dumbledore. He didn't much like following Dumbledore without a full explanation of what he was supposed to be doing, but he did it anyway and kept the whole thing a secret from everyone including Harry. I think that Dumbledore felt Harry's hatred for and mistrust of Snape was necessary in order to ensure that Voldemort trusted him. I was surprised to find out that both leaders trusted Snape completely even though the followers of neither felt he could be trusted. I personally felt it was a bad idea to completely trust a double agent, which I rightly assumed Dumbledore would know, but Voldemort apparently was too blinded by arrogance to realize that little detail. I believed neither side truly trusted him and that in reality he was loyal to no one, it was only in the weeks before reading the new book that I realized that Snape had had a crush on Lily, Harry's mother, that was revealed subtly in the fifth book, so that crush led him to want to protect Harry even though Harry reminded Snape of his father whom Snape hated. I did accurately predict that Snape was going to die some sort of martyrs death in the end. I didn't think Wormtail would do the same though and I was really upset about some of the other characters that died. I do hope Rowling will eventually tell us what happens to the next generation of wizards, the children of Harry and other members of Dumbledore's Army as well as the grandchildren of the death eaters like Scorpio Malfoy.
