How to make your best impression in your first days on the job

by Avidove

1) Appearances are important. Come in well-dressed and assess the way others in the workplace dress. Adjust your style to fit in.

2) Friendliness counts big! Most likely the entire company has been looking forward to meeting you for some time. Each person will approach you in his or her own way and introduce themselves. Establish something in common with each of them in a positive way.

3) Attitude is where it is at. Show a positive attitude and don't allow yourself to become bogged down by a coworker who has a grudge against another coworker. Often the people who will approach you first will be the supervisor(s), then the coworkers who have few friends will be next. Beware who you align yourself with.

4) Don't despair if you are not the bouncey, friendly type. Most professionals don't conduct themselves that way anyway. Maintain a balance between being friendly and being serious.

5) Learn the job at hand. Make notes, use stickies, basically do whatever you have to do so that you are trained as quickly as possible. Some environments will want you to learn and do things their way and others will count on you to bring in the fresh air of experience. Find out what your company expects of you and deliver.
