There is no doubt that many professional wrestlers are great athletes. One that comes to mind is Kurt Angle, a former Olympic wrestling (real wrestling) champion. His first attempt at life beyond amateur wrestling was a failed tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brock Lesnar flopped with the Minnesota Vikings, but that was a post-pro westling attempt at becoming something other than a roided-up clown.
Professional wrestling's stars are rarely the "athletes" with the most talent. Instead, the wrestler with the best gimmick usually has the championship belt. With mixed martial arts stealing much of the WWE's thunder, these gimmicks have become increasingly clownish, well past the point of being unwatchable by those of us with at least a little self-respect.
To classify professional wrestling as a sport is ludicrous. The recent car bomb stunt by Vince McMahon and the Chris Benoit tragedy have marked the WWE as the theater of the absurd. The deaths of Owen Hart, Eddie Guerrero, Rick Rude, Curt Hennig, etc. have all been very premature. The high price of participating in this trash alone should be enough to remove wrestling from the realm of sport. It is high time that it should burn out completely and no longer even be considered entertainment.

I would define a sport as an activity that takes athletic ability, and skill to perform. Wrestling falls into this category.
