an ability to make up reasons not to wear the helmet. That continued until last Thursday. Thursday was a dayI will never forget. If I begin to forget, I hope someone reminds me.
On the way home from work, I came upon an accident occurring. The only thing I could see from my point of view was a semi truck swerving as if to avoid something. Then I saw the bike lying on the ground. As a person trained who works in a hospital, I stopped to help. It was all I could do to keep my lunch from coming up when I saw what had resulted from the accident.
As I mentioned, I will not go into gory detail. It would not serve my purpose here, and would be disrespectful to young man who ended up losing his Life that day. Myself and two other gentleman did everything we knew to keep this man alive. Although I have had nightmares since that day, it is not the nightmares, nor the blood that was my wake up call. Instead I will tell you about the little things going on around me.
I remember the man standing over us with tears in his eyes. He was the driver of the pickup truck. He is also a young man. He will live with this the rest of his LIFE. Its not a matter of guilt, just the fact that he was invloved in such a situation. Then there was the phone call I heard being made. The person making the call could only say, " Come quick, Joe's been in an accident, its real bad."
Cars drove by slowly. Each rubbernecker, trying their hardest to get a view of the dessimation. I remember trying to get the man on his side. It took four of us to do it safely. Kneeling at his legs, I had to use all my strength to get him from the guardrail under which he had been wedged. With several tugs he was free, but the forced threw the mans arm onto mine. When I looked at his hand,I saw the wedding ring. I later found out the man was only 21 years old. What a waste. By the time all the police, fireman and EMT's were on the scene, there was a five mile traffic backup and at least 30-40 people doing their jobs or helping as they thought they could.
Minutes after the ambulance arrived. One EMT handed me one end of a yellow plastic sheet. The other end was place over his head. I DID NOT WANT TO PLACE MY END DOWN. It was finality asloud and clear as ever could be made possible. Deep down, I felt a little relief that I did not have to see his eyes any longer. His expression could only be described as the look of fright just before impact. Fright frozen in time.
When I started writing this essay, I mentioned that
