Layoffs & Firings

When getting fired is an opportunity for change and growth

Anytime you get fired you can use it as an opportunity for change and growth. It does not matter what the circumstances are. If you were fired from a job, chances are you did not suit someone or you were not a proper fit. This all sounds pretty negative, but it does not have to be.

If you don't suit someone, you don't need to work for or with that person anyway. The same goes if you did not fit, or were called incapable of performing a certain task that was imperative to that position.

The experiences you can take with you from those scenarios are quite valuable. The next time you go to a job interview, ask yourself: Are the people anything at all like the last person that fired me? Is this the same environment, or is it different? If you find similarities, be careful. Even if the person hiring you will not be a direct co-worker, they still represent the personality of the company you are applying for. The same goes for the work environment. If there was a task you had been found unsuitable for, try not to apply for a job that is centered around those same types of tasks.

It is likely that you found previous firings unjust. However, keep in mind that we tend to perceive ourselves differently. Other people always see us in a different light than we do ourselves. That does not make anyone right or wrong, it is just human nature. If you try to avoid the types of situations you have been in before getting fired, chances are you will be happier.

What about if you were fired for something that is more serious? For example, if you were fired for speaking out against sexual harassment. Even while this was probably a very difficult (and likely illegal) situation and you were right and the employer wrong, you can still learn from it. Reflect on what led up to that situation. Were there any warning signs early on, possibly even as early as the pertaining job interview? If you can answer that question, you can avoid getting hired by an employer were circumstances would be similar. In turn you are likely to have a more positive experience at your next place of employment.

Those reasons also add to the importance of always researching prospective new employers. In addition, you can always share your experiences with companies that you were fired from with your friends, so they can better evaluate if these places would be suitable for them. Just be careful that your word does not get around to a potential interviewer. No matter how negative you feel about your last firing, it is always better to not speak bad about your last employer to your (prospective) new employer. If that makes you uncomfortable, you can always abide by the saying: if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all.
