A candle, like any other implement used during a ritual, has no inherent magickal power of it's own. The powerful energies that are raised and released during a ritual or spellcasting originate within the Witch him/herself. That is not to say that candles and other tools have no place in a ritual, because they do.
First, most Witches/Wiccans prefer to perform any necessary rituals or spellwork at night. And having a light source is always preferable to stumbling around in the dark. Secondly, candlelight is beautiful. The visual effect created by an alter bathed in soft glow and dancing shadows is breath-taking. It creates in the mind a place outside of time. And that is the function of any magickal tool-to awaken the awe and magick and wonder of the Witch. Candles help to create that other-worldly feeling that helps the Witch to raise and release the energy and power inside of him/herself.
