The only power we have is as consumers. Forget the vote; what we buy or don't buy has far more power to change the world as it is the multinationals that control us, rather than our governments. One of the few ways our governments can still help is to put us in position where we can become informed consumers, rather than blind victims of price wars and marketing.
Therefore the FDA should require US food manufacturers to reveal if foods are genetically modified. While, to my mind, it would be better were genetic farming banned (I shan't go into details here, I'm sure others have already written better and more on this point than I am able elsewhere), if the step has already been taken to grow these crops, the option ought to be open to consumers to reverse the trend via their buying choices.
As things stand some companies choose to put 'No GM ingredients' on their packaging. Can we assume their competitors are all using genetically modified ingredients? Probably not. Therefore, to create a level playing field and promote competition, a fair labeling system supported by the FDA is the best way forward.
