Job search: Tips for negotiating benefits

by jayj

Negotiation of money or benefits are sensitive subjects and should be handled with care. This is not a conflict of wills. Successful negotiation is about working together to achieve the same aim. The negotiation process should leave the employer and employee (if this is the case) as if they have both gained something from the finalised benefits package. Here are some tips to help you negotiate yourself to a better package.

1. Research. How does the package compare to the salary?

2. Market Place. What is offered as a benefit package for a similar/same position? Match yourself to the market if you can. Slightly higher if you think you are worth more (around 10%).

3. Network. Find out from contacts, web, careers office if the company has room to expand on it's original benefits package.

4. Salary. Think about your happiness in the work place. Would you want a higher salary in a job where you are not contented? Weigh up the pros and cons.

5. Recruitment consultants. Tell them what you expect from your benefits package. Stress your job skills and worth. Speak to them about the market value and find out as much information from them as you can.

6. Be direct. If the employer is not clear about the benefits package, ask him/her to clarify it.

7. Always wait for the employer to bring up the subject of benefits first. This will put you in a position of negotiating control. If you bring up the subject first, the package may be lower than the employer intends to offer.

Now you are on the way to achieving the benefit package you have been waiting for!
