In the big picture road privatization is way low on the list. In fact in Colorado there is a bit of sub-contracting of roadwork and it makes no difference. The immediate problem I see with that idea is first and foremost another avenue of either corruption or collusion. The last thing the government needs is more bureaucracy. The biggest problem with why asphalt roads don't last is because they are never allowed to set up. If you notice racecourse's hold up what better under more pressure, because they are allowed to set up.
Another concern is the fact that private companies will use illegal or semi-illegal help causing Americans to lose jobs. Anytime there is a cut or privatization good people lose jobs. Also believing that taxes might be lowered is again a pipe dream. More important questions to ask are why do the police emphasize traffic enforcement over physical and property issues, oh yeah that doesn't make money!
