We allege that we are a civilized society. Yet our society seems very uncivil to our 2 and 4-legged brothers and sisters. How civil is it to conduct experiments on those who can not defend themselves from us? How moral or ethical? I believe is it none of the above.

In my experience, there is no difference between us and other species. We breathe the same air, need the same water to live, we both need food, shelter, we both breed, we both protect and nurture our young. We both teach our young to survive in this world. We both have feelings and intellect.

Anyone who has ever loved a pet is fully aware of the soul of the being they cared for. You feel it with all of your being, inside and out, yet, you can't quite put it into words. That being is just like you. If for some reason you haven't felt it; it's no doubt because you've been raised to believe that it's a lesser being than your or because you have closed yourself off for some other reason.

These beings love us more than our own kind. They save lives, they help heal the sick, they warn us when loved ones are ill or dying. Has no one read the recent articles about ""Oscar" the Seattle, RI retirement home cat" who lays with the dying patients, comforting them?

I personally have a Calico Manx who has saved my life and that of my family from a gas leak in our home.

And were it not for the dolphins helping Autistic children; what progress would be made by now? Or the dogs who so diligently guard the blind and disabled family that they love.

And let's not forget the Quadriplegics who have monkeys to cook and assist them with various tasks. Monkeys, chimps and the like who might have otherwise ended up on the stinging end of a test syringe.

When beings such as these, are capable of giving so much healing and aid to our species; and are so willing to learn to do so; how can it be moral, ethical or civilized to use them as experiments when we wouldn't dare do it on our own kind?
Clearly, it contains no conscience to torture them in this manner.

Are such a pompous and arrogant species that we think that we can control the very life and suffering of every other living being on the planet? If we indeed are, then doesn't that make us the most dangerous and vicious predator of all? And if that is true of humans, need I ask how much more we can do to each other? I doubt it. One merely needs to continue watching the nightly news to see exactly how vicious of a predator we humans really are. May God help us along with the other species. Even with all of our educational institutions and processes, we just don't seem to ever really learn.
