Understanding the difference between chat, instant messaging and forums

Being an internet junkie for the last ten or so years of my life, I have determined the easiest way to understand the differences between chat, instant messaging, and forums.

Before I get to the differences, there are two main similarities.

First, all three are ways of communication, and can hook you through to other parts of the United States and the World.

The second thing these three have in common is the fact that they can be your connections in a social and informational sense.

Now, to the part of the article that we want to know more about!

What are these differences?

Chat is an online forum that multiple people can log-in to and talk to any number of others in the "chatroom".

Chats consist of one, or multiple, moderators to make sure chats are of decent conversation. Moderators, or mods, can kick users out that they deem improper for the chatroom. They can kick users out for a temporary short amount of time, or they can kick users out indefinately.

Instant messaging is an online written conversation between two, or more, people. Sometimes, one can get into a group instant message, but it is mostly one-on-one conversations.

Because these are private, no moderators are needed for this.

Major messaging services are AOL, MSN, and Yahoo. There are others, but these three are the main three.

A forum is a place, like Helium.com, that one can post his/her own ideas and get feedback on what was written. One can also post feedback on another user's ideas.

Forums usually have a common theme to them, such as writing or automobiles.

Many forums have moderators as well, but these are harder to get kicked out of. Forums tend to have a more laid-back feel. The feel is brought upon by the ability to not read a post if you don't want to.

In chatrooms, anything said will be posted for everyone to see and read. In forums, you have to open the pages of the forum to see it.

Therefore, in forums, users have control of what they want to read and what they do not.

When looking at the three as a whole, it may seem confusing. However, when you are able to use all three, it makes life a whole lot easier.
