What is the secret of writing a professional resume and making it stand out? The resume needs to be concisely written with the information of value to the employer. If the data does not suit the needs of your new employer, leave it out! Your prospective employer wants to hire the best person for the job and who will produce the results he or see is looking for. Therefore, it is your first priority to research the company and find out what the employer needs for the post you are applying for.
The following points should be adhered to when writing a professional resume:
1. You must decide on the title of the post you are applying for. The text of the resume must must continually be written with this title in mind.
2. Research what the job requires. To do this you could find the job descriptions that match your future job title. The Internet or the library is always a good place to start.
3. The job description should now be compared and contrasted to your training, skill level and experience.
4. Write the opening statement. This should present you as the ideal person for the job, based on your research and qualifications.
5. Skills should be listed fully. Your computer skills are one of the most valuable assets to any employer. Make sure that you list all of your computer qualifications. If you do not have computer qualifications, then I would strongly recommend that you take a course.
6. The employment history should be written in chronological order and titled.
7. Write supporting statements for each of these past employers. You should say what your responsibilities were and be concise.
8. Achievements should be bullet pointed under each job title. Do not repeat the same achievements twice and again be concise. The reader does not want to be bored.
9. Education details are generally listed at the bottom of your resume. List everything that is relevant and will encourage the employer to contact you.
10. In the extra information section only write about any Organisations you belong to which will support your application. Do not write about activities you are doing outside of the workplace which do not support your application. The only time to do this is if you are a school leaver with no, or little experience.
11. The conclusion of the resume should be an attractive and persuasive advertisement of you. You must be succinct and concise and think of how to market yourself in this paragraph. Remember the benefits that you are offering this employer and the results that they will gain through employing you!
