Compost: How to make better dirt than you can buy

Vermiposting (worms)is a good companion to composting. A worm bin uses the same household waste, grass, manure etc. as a compost pile but with some added benefits.
During cold winter months compost piles tend to slow down where as a well sheltered worm bin stays active.
There are a number of quality worm composting bins on the market, or you can build your own. Go to a catalog or web site selling vermiposters and get ideas on making one yourself. Remember to feed your worms frequently and keep their bin moist but not soggy.
Another tip is to buy composting worms. All worms are not the same. Worms dug out of your garden or purchased at a bait house do not do well in a vermiposter. They tend to feed downward, where as composting worms feed upward. The worms bought at the bait shop are great in your garden soil, but not in your vermiposter.
Worms multiply rather rapidly with a compost pile of nutrients to feed on. In a short time you have a good source of composted materials enriched with worm castings
(worm poop), and more worms to start new bins, share with or sell to friends and neighbors.
