Mental coping mechanisms for obsessive thoughts

People often scoff at this suggestion but I assure you it works! I am a Life Coach and when my clients apply this to their lives they come back with glowing reports of great relief from obsessive and troublesome thoughts.

Many years ago I read an article by the late Norman Vincent Peale. He shared a story of a man who had horrible battles with worrisome and obsessive thinking.

One day it occurred to this man to put the thoughts inside a lock box and choose to only worry about them every Wednesday afternoon! Promising himself he could "worry up a storm every Wednesday afternoon to his hearts content."

To his amazement when opening the box the following Wednesday MOST OF HIS OBSESSIVE THOUGHTS OR WORRIES HAD BEEN RESOLVED WITHOUT HIS HELP! This is so true, they say only about 2% of the things we obsess over really come to pass.

I implemented this and did it in a fun way in my own life. I call it my "Trust Box"

I got a beautiful, colorful box and wrote each obsessive/worrisome thought on a small piece of paper. During the week when tempted to obsess over a situation UNLESS I WAS GIVEN A VERY CLEAR IMPRESSION ON HOW TO HANDLE IT...I would just say and yes, I would even say it aloud. "I will think about it on Wednesday it is IN THE BOX!" (of course you can choose to open your box any day of the week to your liking).

Something about writing it down and closing it up in the box is symbolic. If you are a person who believes in God, or a Higher Power...when you place the thought in the box you might say. "It is out of my hands and now in yours!"

I encourage you to try it this week and see what great changes it makes for you!
