The Microsoft Forefront Security technology was built to protect the Microsoft Exchange 2007 and Microsoft SharePoint environments, however this review will only discuss the protection of Sharepoint sites.

Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies is a groupware solution which also permits viruses to proliferate rapidly throughout an organization. In SharePoint Products and Technologies, viruses can exist in documents saved in the various content sources, which may include public folders, workspaces, and Web sites. Traditional anti-virus technology cannot monitor or scan the contents of these diverse storage units. SharePoint environments require an antivirus solution that can prevent the spread of viruses by scanning all documents in real time as they are accessed or stored while not impacting server performance.

Forefront for SharePoint is designed to protect servers running Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2007 or Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2007. Both versions run on either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the SharePoint server and have identical functionality. Antigen for SharePoint is the previous version and is used for SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 environments.

Both products store the configuration data for the Forefront for SharePoint Real time Scan in the SharePoint Portal Server or Windows SharePoint Services configuration database, and not in a separate Forefront for SharePoint database. This means that users can access the configuration data from either the Microsoft Forefront Server Security Administrator or from the SharePoint Administrator.

Forefront for SharePoint also supports the Microsoft Forefront Server Security Management Console (FSSMC). The FSSMC provides administrators with central installation and reporting functionality.

Forefront Security for SharePoint includes industry-leading anti-virus engines from global security firms such as Kaspersky Labs, Computer Associates, and Sophos. The software is designed to maximize threat protection by enabling IT (information technology) to run up to five scan engines at once from industry-leading anti-virus labs around the world. All documents are scanned as they are uploaded to, and retrieved from, SharePoint libraries. This provides rapid response to new threats regardless of where the threat originates. Forefront Security for SharePoint is designed to automatically download the latest signatures and selects the optimal combination of engines
