The Irish Wolfhound was originally a dog of war, used to drag men off horse back and Chariots. The Romans so admired the dog's courage, that in 365 A.D., they built a statuette of the animal called the 'Lydney Dog'. It was not until 600 A.D., that the kings and nobles refused to share the dog, allowing it to only be owned by persons with a high social states.
The 'great Irish hound', as it was called, could always be seen accompanying Irish nobles into war. Now a days, it is still regarded as the 'Gentle Giant'. And, many people own one for its excellent disposition, formidable intelligence, and loving nature towards children. It's commanding appearance displays its power, activity, speed, and strength- truly a dog breed for Kings.
The recognized colors of the Irish Wolfhound is multiples of red, black, gray, pure white, wheaten, fawn, and brindle. But excess white spotting is not acceptable. Nor, is white pigments by their chest or collar area. The breed is currently in danger of breeding standards- because of the lack of educated breeders.
If you decide on owning one, choose carefully. Only about two, out of every litter, would be recognized as breed quality. They should weigh anywhere from 130-180 lbs., with height being 32-38 inches. And, because of their natural instincts, they should have a large fenced-in yard for exercise.
Their diet should be based on the advice of your personal Veterinarian. This is a large dog and should be feed as one. Good nutrition is the key to healthy teeth, strong bones, and shiny coat. And, the fundamental rule... companionship. Give them lots of love and affection to keep that good nature instilled with in their hearts.
