A bout with the blues or slight depression is something that occurs in all of us and there is nothing to worry about with that. Make those fleeting incidences a reflective time and let the blues change its course naturally. Sometimes depression may come on unexpectedly and other times it can be brought upon by more common events. The simplest incident of even a rejection of an article can set off a case of the blues.
Low sugar levels or normal emotional reactions to stressful events such as grief, loss of job or a break-up of a relationship can also attribute to a dosage of depression. These emotional feelings typically improve with time.
According to Dr. John M. Grohol, Psy.D, at psychcentral.com, if you answer yes to any of the following questions or if the blues last longer than usual, it may be a more serious type of disorder in the depression spectrum.
- "Is your mood interfering with your personal relationships or your job performance?"
- "Have these feelings lasted for longer than two weeks?"
- "Are you beginning to feel worthless or guilty about the situation?"
- "Is the stress not allowing you to find happiness in other parts of your life?"
In the case of a yes answer to any of these questions it is time to see your doctor to discuss these episodes.
Happiness is not a destination; it is a manner of travel. So take the everyday blues on a wild ride until it subsides. Life is a series of changes. Some of them small, some major and everyday should be viewed as a new beginning. When the blues hit, rely on your friends. Go ahead and cry as it is a rekindling of the mind and soul and you should feel back to your normal self in no time.
The best way to beat the blues may be one the three ways that work for me. Funny that it seems I always get the blues on rainy days but taking a long walk in the rain helps me reflect my day, week, year, and life. Afterward, I have a cup of something warm and a smile emerges.
I have also found that watching an old movie alleviates this temporary state. But watch the ones that cause the tear buckets to flow. To indulge in the mystical, meditative and surreal aspects of other people's troubles only make your own seem slight. Subsequently, I realize that I have nothing to feel blue about.
The third way is to be near the ocean and listen to the sound of the surf. Something about the pounding water against the shore tends bring a new rhythm to my brain. The water is a true paradox like life. We can learn from it with each roll of waves because it is speaking to us.
The sun then shines, seasons change and the gradual transformation to realism makes one appreciate that we are full of human emotions and we're still here and still striving. Go for the gusto of life, for we only experience it once.
