It seems to me that, with the exception of today's cartoons that are aimed at small children, the best cartoons ever made were the ones I watched when I was a kid. These cartoons were suitable for, and loved by, viewers of all ages. They were just plain good fun - no hype, no violence, nothing that most people would find offensive. Having said that, a pastor once told me he wouldn't let his kids watch Bugs Bunny because he was always doing bad things and getting away with it. However, personally I think he was taking Bugsy a bit too seriously and I doubt that the average kid would deduce from the larrikin bunny's cartoons that it was perfectly OK to be naughty as long as you could get away with it.
I have so many favourite cartoons from when I was a kid - and now that we can buy an abundance of wonderful old cartoons series on DVD, my children are familiar with them too. So a new generation is coming to love these old classics as I have for close to four decades.
Who could be more funny and memorable than Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble - and their ever-sweet, long-suffering wives, Wilma and Betty? The characters are great, the stories are hilarious - and they are certainly aimed just as much at adults as they are at kids. Recently, when I've been watching some of these cartoons on DVD, I've been amazed at how they just haven't really dated at all. Even though they were supposed to be set in the stone age, there is so much in them that pertains to modern life as well - and despite the fact that they were made a few decades ago, they still closely represent so much about our lives today. What more do I need to say apart from "Yabba Dabba Doo!"
Then there's Yogi Bear, his little friend, Boo Boo, his girlfriend, Cindy - and of course, "Mr Ranger, Sir", who is driven to distraction by that lovable trickster, who's "smarter than the average bear"! We just love these characters and our kids are delighted when my husband talks in their voices.
We also love that delightful pair, Tweety and Sylvester - the sweet little birdie swinging happily in his cage, while the scheming "puddy tat" constantly hatches new plots to catch his feathered friend. You get the impression he could never actually eat him even if he had him in his paws - and that Tweety is really very fond of his feline predator - "that naughty puddy tat"!
Of course Mickey Mouse - that creation of Walt Disney himself - has to be one of the most beloved of all cartoon characters - and is wonderfully complemented
